Comic book grading app: what to look for

A good comic grading app asks for honest photos, lets you say what you see, shows its work, and is plain about what it is not.

The phone is the easy part. The photos and the honesty are the grade.

What a comic grading app actually does

A comic book grading app turns your phone camera into the first step of a condition read. You photograph a raw book, the app looks at what the photos show, and you get an estimate on the 10-point scale. That is useful for deciding whether to list, keep, press, or spend more on a book. It is not the same as a professional grading service examining the book in hand and sealing it in a holder.

Apps differ more than their screenshots suggest. Some want one cover photo; some want a full set. Some let you describe defects; some don't. Some show their reasoning; some just print a number. The checklist below is what we would look for in any AI comic book grading tool — with an honest note on how GradeMyGrail handles each point.

The checklist

1. Does it need a download?

Some grading apps live in an app store. Others run in your phone browser. Both can work; the question is whether you can try it before committing space and an account.

GradeMyGrail is a web app, not an App Store or Google Play app. It runs in your phone browser with nothing to download. If you want it on your home screen, add it there and it opens full-screen — camera, grades, and account — like a native app. In Chrome, open the menu and tap Install app or Add to Home screen. On iPhone, use Safari's Share menu and tap Add to Home Screen. You can sign up with Google, X, or email.

2. What photos does it ask for?

A grade can only be as honest as the photos. Glare hides color-breaking stress, a cover shot at an angle foreshortens creases, and beauty filters flatten a crease into a soft shadow. An app that is happy with one flattering cover shot is guessing.

GradeMyGrail starts with the front and back cover — that is enough to start. The full set is three staple-aligned spine close-ups, a close-up of each corner, and an interior spread for page quality. When a category is missing, the estimate assumes the more serious plausible reading. See how to photograph a comic for the setup.

3. Can you tell it what you see?

You are holding the book; the app is not. Some defects — tape pull, adhesive haze, scuffs that blend into a dark cover — are obvious in hand and nearly invisible in a straight-on photo. A good app gives you a way to say so.

On GradeMyGrail, you measure the defects. You fill the defect chart: spine ticks, creases with length, tears, stains, splits, foxing, staples, and wear. The dropdowns are the chart cells, and the lowest matching row is the grade. AI, using your scans and our proprietary grading tools, assigns the grade. Notes can tell the grader to ignore an artist signature or intentional writing. They cannot ask for a kinder paper color than the interior shot shows. Collector-named defects are treated as present when the photos are inconclusive.

4. Does it show its work?

A bare number is hard to trust and hard to argue with. Look for a report that says why: the designation, page color, and the specific defects that held the grade where it is.

Each GradeMyGrail report is a numeric grade and designation, page color, short defect bullets such as edge wear, corner wear, and spine stress, optional press notes, and the same disclaimer every time. A press note means a pressable item was visible; it is not an instruction to press. There is a sample report on the homepage so you can see the layout before you pay for anything.

5. Which scale does it use, and what happens when it is close?

Look for a real 10-point ladder and a clear rule for in-between books. An app that rounds up feels good and costs you money later.

GradeMyGrail uses only valid numbers from 10.0 Gem Mint to 0.5 Poor — there is no 9.7 or 9.5. When a book sits between two grades, the lower one is assigned. Color-breaking defects weigh more than the same defect without a break, and page quality is a hard ceiling: White is required for 10.0, and Brittle cannot exceed 3.5. The full ladder is in the grading scale.

6. Is it honest about what it is?

Any app grading from photos is giving you an estimate. Be wary of one that sounds like a certificate, and remember that condition and price are separate questions.

GradeMyGrail is an AI comic book grader for raw, unslabbed books. It is not a slab, not a price, and not a professional certification, and it does not predict a future holder grade. If you need a sealed holder, that is a professional grading service, after you decide the copy is worth the fee. How accurate is AI comic book grading? covers what photos can and can't show.

7. Is the price clear — and what happens when it fails?

Look for a per-grade price you can see up front, and a policy for failed grades.

GradeMyGrail is 50¢ per grade (1 credit). The first 500 sign ups get 1 free grade. Failed grades are refunded. If your grade includes a note about a defect the scan didn't detect, send a screenshot of the grade, the note, and a picture of the defect clearly shown to Grademygrail@gmail.com, and we will give you another grading credit.
