How to grade a comic book at home

A conservative home method: honest photos, structure first, paper as a ceiling, color breaks over bends, and the lower number when you are unsure.

Raw comic book photographed square to the camera, ready to be graded for raw condition.
Grade the book in the photos, not the book you remember buying.

You are grading condition, not price

A comic book grade is a conservative read of structure plus paper. It is not a sale price, a slab, or a promise of what someone else will later certify. At home you can get very close to an honest number if you photograph the book square, name the defects you actually see, and refuse to round up. Want a second read? GradeMyGrail is an AI comic book grader for raw books — photograph front and back and get a conservative grade for 50¢.

How to grade a comic book in 7 steps

  1. Work in bright, even light and shoot square photos with filters, portrait mode and HDR off.
  2. Photograph the front, back, three spine close-ups, each corner, and an interior spread.
  3. Read structure first: creases, spine ticks, roll, splits, chips, tears, and missing pages.
  4. Check each defect for a color break. Broken ink counts far more than a bend that didn't break color.
  5. Read page quality as a ceiling. Tan or brittle paper caps the grade no matter how sharp the cover is.
  6. Pick a valid number on the 10.0 to 0.5 scale.
  7. When unsure between two grades, take the lower one.

The scale this site uses is a 10-point ladder with named designations from 10.0 Gem Mint to 0.5 Poor. Only these numbers are valid: 10.0, 9.9, 9.8, 9.6, 9.4, 9.2, 9.0, 8.5, 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.5, 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, 1.8, 1.5, 1.0, and 0.5. There is no 9.7 or 9.5. If the book sits between two rungs, the lower grade is the honest one.

Photograph first — then judge

Do not grade from memory or from a flattering listing shot. Lay the book on a clean contrasting surface in daylight or under one diffuse lamp. Keep the camera parallel to the cover. Turn off beauty filters, portrait mode, and HDR. Those flatten a crease into a soft shadow.

Required angles: full front including the right edge, full back including the barcode area, three staple-aligned spine close-ups (head to first staple, first staple to last staple, last staple to foot), a dedicated close-up of each of the four corners (one photo per corner — you cannot see all four in a single frame), and an interior spread for page quality. An optional full-height spine on edge shows roll. A noted-defects close-up catches tape pull or camouflaged wear a single cover photo hides. When a category is missing, assume the more serious plausible reading.

  • Even light, camera square, no direct flash.
  • Front, back, three spine close-ups, each corner close-up, interior paper.
  • One book per shot. Do not crop corners or the right edge.

Read structure, then apply the paper ceiling

Look at creases, spine ticks, roll, splits, chips, tears, and completeness first. A beautiful wrap around missing story pages is not a high-grade book. Length of a crease is only one factor: depth, location, color break, and accumulation all move the number.

Then read the interiors. Page quality is a hard ceiling, not a bonus. White is required for 10.0. Off-White to White is the lowest allowed for 9.9. Off-White is the typical minimum for 9.8 and above. Light Tan to Off-White cannot exceed 8.5. Tan to Off-White cannot exceed about 7.5. Slightly brittle cannot exceed 6.5. Brittle cannot exceed 3.5. A sharp cover cannot outrun tan or brittle paper.

Color breaks cost more than the same-size bend

A color-breaking crease, tick, or bend — white paper showing through cracked ink — is substantially more serious than a bend of the same length that did not break color. Pressing can relax a wave or a light non-breaking bend. It cannot put ink back. At the top of the ladder, any meaningful color break usually prevents the highest near-mint reads.

Manufacturing defects (printer crease, minor miswrap, tiny bindery chips) are treated more leniently than handling of the same size — except at 9.8 and above, where almost nothing is shrugged off. If a signature or dedication is intentional, say so in the notes. Otherwise writing on the cover is a defect.

When you are between two grades, go lower

Home graders inflate. The honest habit is the opposite: if you are arguing with yourself between 9.4 and 9.2, it is a 9.2. If photos are thin, assume the more serious plausible spine, corner, or paper color. Letter-grade shorthand (NM, VF, FN, VG) is a band, not a number — see the letter-grade guide when a listing only prints VF.

If you want a second set of eyes, photograph the required sides and get a conservative raw estimate. 50¢ per book. Failed grades are refunded.
